November 2024 Update

The site cabins have arrived and have been commissioned.

Our Community Liaison Officer, Alexa, has been out and about meeting some of the lovely folk in and around Clay Cross. Alexa visited The Men’s Shed (the group includes women too). They are a fantastic organisation that have woodwork and metalwork activities and where people can have a chat and a cuppa.

Upcycled timber step ladder

They are such a popular organisation that they are outgrowing their current space which has kindly been given to them by another great community group, Wingerworth Junior Sports Association, who run youth football. The Men’s Shed really need more space to spread out and to add further cabins for their workshops; this would enable them to help more members of the community and provide that essential space for people to engage and create. They have upcycled some of the waste timber from site to make a new storage shed and step ladders. They were also at the Clay Cross Christmas Fair on Saturday 30 November with some of the other items that they make.

On Site Update

November recap

  • Removal of the roof from Block A / Old Baptist Church Smithybrook Rd to enable steel structure works.
  • The community may have have noticed deliveries of extra-large concrete blocks – these are being used to retain walls of the Old Baptist Church during the renovations.
  • Our hoarding is now branded with information regarding what’s going on within the development. Artwork on the hoarding has been designed by the children from local schools and we think it looks amazing!
  • We have had large quantities of soil removed from site during the ground works stage to enable the development of our new structures. During this we have tried to cause as little disruption to the town as possible and we would like to thank the people of the town for their understanding and co-operation during this vital part of our works.
  • From Monday 25 November, the town will have noticed a large crane overlooking the town. This is to swing the Extra-large concrete block into place to help hold up the external walls of the Old Baptist Church while we redevelop it.

Upcoming in December

  • Façade retention works to the Old Baptist Church and scaffolding erected to encase external walls to allow renovation works.
  • Formation of structural concrete slabs to new units with Broadleys Field.
  • Formation of ground for Piling to commence in the New Year.

A new time-lapse is available for Baileys Square construction progress - October to November.

Please note:The construction site and the infoHUB will be closed from Tuesday 24 December and reopening on Thursday 2 January.

October 2024 Update

Hello and welcome to the first news bulletin from the Inside Team.

We’re the main contractor carrying out the building works and we are all excited to be working on this project. We know the Clay Cross Town Deal isn’t just about the buildings; we are helping to develop the next chapter in the history of Clay Cross and we’re looking forward to being a positive part of the community while we’re here.

We are going to produce this newsletter on a monthly basis, to keep you up to date with what’s going to be happening.

Unfortunately, we can’t avoid some disruption, but we do promise to keep it to a minimum and to be considerate at all times.

- Chris Walpole, Project Director

Meet the Team

What we've been doing so far:

  • A routine archaeological study has been completed which lasted longer than expected because really well preserved cellars of 19th century brick terraced housing were discovered, including steps going down to the cellars.
  • We’ve had daytime and night time bat surveys carried out to ensure we don’t disturb any bat habitats.
  • Asbestos surveys have taken place to ensure its safe removal if any is found in the buildings that are being demolished or modified.
  • All the overgrown vegetation has been cleared from site ready for groundworks to start.
  • A condition survey has also been carried out for Broadleys, Bridge Street and Market Street.
  • The time-lapse camera has been installed. This will capture progress on site as we go. We’ll update these for each newsletter and they’ll get better as we progress with the project!

What's happening next?

Over the next month or so, you can expect to see the following activities happening:

  • Temporary works will soon start on the old Adult Community Education Service building directly behind the Derbyshire Countryside Services / Derbyshire Constabulary building. We will demolish the New Inn pub’s outhouse building on its east elevation, remove the single storey front elevation and carry on stripping out internally.
  • You will see a lot of earthworks on Baileys Square. We will keep the Smithybrook and Broadleys roads as clean as possible as our vehicles come and go on site.
  • Acoustic fencing will be put up to keep noise to a minimum on the southern boundary of Baileys Square and upgrade our hoarding to add some fantastic pictures from the children at the local school.
  • Site cabins are due to arrive in the next few weeks.
